M87 is a huge elliptical galaxy in Virgo.
Although it seems to be the ordinary elliptical galaxy when it is observed through visible light,
it turn out, by the various features, that it is a peculiar active galaxy.
It was known by observation of visible light from the beginning of this century that the arrow-like jet of light exists in M87. Then, by development of radio astronomy and optical astronomy, the detailed image of a jet was obtained, so that it turned out the jet was blowing off from the very center of M87. Furthermore, M87 is located at the center of the Virgo Cluster of galaxies, and it is now thought that M87 was formed by a successive merging of many galaxies. M87（メシエ87）は，おとめ座にある巨大楕円銀河です．
写真で眺めているとありきたりの楕円銀河のようですが，
さまざまな特徴から普通の楕円銀河でないことがわかります．
可視光では，今世紀の初頭から， M87には光の矢−ジェットが存在していることが知られていましたが， 電波天文学や光学天文学の発達によってジェットの詳細な画像が得られ， ジェットがM87のごく中心部から吹き出していることが判明しました． さらにM87は，いわゆるおとめ座銀河団と呼ばれる銀河集団の中心に位置しており， 多数の銀河が衝突合体して，今日の巨大なM87が形成されたのだと考えられています． |
